Castelfalfi Notes

The Autumn Rhythm of Tuscany

Tuscany looks small on the map of Italy and almost endless once you begin to live in it and move around. For Italians it is vast; for Americans and Russians it feels compact. Yet the sense of discovery here never really ends.

Florence is not a city for one day. Even to merely touch it, you need three to five days. And almost always you want to return—again for a few days—to continue uncovering layers of history, art, and everyday life that never seem to run out. This is the heart of Tuscany: dense, powerful, endlessly saturated.

But after Florence, another desire almost inevitably appears—the need to leave the city and go where the rhythm changes. Toward the hills and the countryside. Castelfalfi becomes an obvious first choice if you are looking for five-star service without urban noise. There is a hotel with restaurants, and there are private villas for rent—a format that offers freedom without sacrificing level.

The location is practical: close to Pisa airport, near Forte dei Marmi, within easy reach of San Gimignano. From here it is simple to organise truffle hunts, wine visits, and gastronomic routes. This is one of those rare regions where food and wine are genuinely outstanding—not by reputation, but by substance.

I already know where I would take clients here. The irony is that the best places do not look grand and rarely resemble Michelin polish. That is precisely why I will not list them. Ask in the comments.

From a Different Rhythm

Before Castelfalfi, we spent the summer working on Lake Como. Just a few hours of driving—and the sensation is completely different. Como lives on reflections, water, and light. Tuscany lives on land, people, and gestures. The contrast is immediate.

We had been to Castelfalfi before, almost always in summer. This time, we arrived in October.

When we came, the high season was already over, yet the weather remained remarkably generous. We walked in shirts, without haste and without heat. Pools were still open, terraces cleared of excess, and kitchens returned to simple, honest food: roasted pumpkin, fresh olive oil, bread still warm from the oven.

Many people value this time most: fewer guests, softer temperatures, a more reasonable rhythm. Autumn here is not about slowing down—it is about balance.

In the Kitchen with Mira

Inside the villa, the rhythm shifts again. Mira begins her quiet rituals—tying her apron, opening the shutters, laying out herbs from the morning market. Cooking here is not a performance; it is a form of communication.

Lunch is prepared the way locals cook in autumn: pici pasta with porcini mushrooms, grilled artichokes, pears slowly cooked in red wine. The house fills with grounded aromas that seem to settle into the walls. Between dishes, we taste the first-press olive oil—green, peppery, alive.

“In Tuscany,” Mira says, “no one chases flavour. It arrives on its own, in its own time.”

The kitchen becomes the centre of villa life—the place where travel, work, and rest converge into one calm, continuous movement.

A Concert lasted few days

During these days, we were working in a private villa with a wealthy Indian family. The head of the family is a producer in the music industry. The house filled with contemporary Indian music—complex, bold, unexpectedly intertwined with jazz and European instruments.

This felt close to me. As a teenager, I was deeply interested in Indian culture and practices, and these sounds resonated immediately. Music lived in the house, accompanying work and pauses between tasks. At times, it felt like being present at a private concert meant for just a few people.

By the End of the Day

By evening, the light turns amber. From the terrace, the view stretches outward: cypress shadows lengthen, the valley lies deep and still.

We dine outside as the sun goes down—two plates, one candle, no sound except crickets. Below, a Range Rover waits, still warm from the day’s drive. Tomorrow—perhaps Pisa. Or perhaps nowhere.

The longer you live in Italy, the clearer it becomes: it is not about how many places you have visited. It is about people. A house can be built anywhere; atmosphere cannot. The people of Tuscany—open, calm, quietly joyful—are what make it one of the best places for life and recovery.

Castelfalfi simply reminds you of that.

Between city and countryside,
life in Tuscany finds its natural pace.
